Rajatabla
Rajatabla, by Luis Britto García, consisting of seventy-three short discounts, was published for the first time in 1970, after having won that same year the prestigious "Casade las Américas" Prize in the story mode. The ethical position, the fierce refusal to live without honor, the vertiginous perception of the fading of everything that ceases to be, and the no less vertiginous transformation of what already only in appearance belongs to the world of the real, the writer's decentralization of their significant previous position, they are some of the great lines that characterize these exemplary mini-tales, perfect in their internal tension, in their capacity for concentration and synthesis, in the unexpected turns that arise amid seemingly neutral situations, or , at least, conventional, such as the unforgettable horror of the story «Meat» where, in a new twist of the theme of A modest proposition, by Jonathan Swift, a classic paradigm of the exercise of irony, children eat beings humans with complete naturalness. The final phrases of many of these texts, crackling, brief and creepy, give them a brilliant closure, a staging of horror different from that of the fantastic tales of Poe, just as terrible, although belonging to another record. The tales of Rajatabla They are not far from reality, but they play with science fiction and the fantastic. That is what his sophisticated character is. Reading the titled "Population" seem to reach our ears echoes of the sadly famous phrase of Millan Astray giving death alive, in a university campus. But along with them also comes the memory of the strong, hard and courageous words of Unamuno, rising lonely against the horror that enclose them of the founder of the Falangist legion. The Basque thinker assumed without reservation, and filling it with meaning, the term of intellectual, that not everyone who dares to use has the size to achieve the measure that it demands. The philosopher Unamuno was never characterized by serenity, and, according to the historical circumstances that he had to live, that were neither easy nor soft, his words, which passionately expressed his beliefs, were violent, severe, critical and controversial. So are those of Luis Britto García also, from this remarkable youth book, which marked a milestone in the Latin American narrative of his time. When in the aforementioned story, "Population" the plague is alive, to end the inhabitants of underdeveloped countries and thus control the population explosion, the author is subjecting to a fierce satire, with the same intelligent passion of Unamuno, attitudes similar to those of Millán Astray.
