OK. I'm going to be brutally honest here. I do not understand the 4 and 5 star reviews for Snow. While it is a passable monster yarn, it brings absolutely nothing new to the horror genre. I've read this plot in hundreds of previous horror novels over the past thirty years. Good looking man/woman protagonists attracted to one another and thrown into a supernatural situation beyond their comprehension? Check. Disappointing father/husband trying to make it back home to little Jr. in time for
Snow is about a guy and a gal who first meet at an airport. They end up stranded when their flights are cancelled due to a snowstorm. Wow, this is the best monster book I've read since Brian Keene's 'Ghoul'. Love the fact that a small town is blanketed by creatures living in the snow. The pacing is spot on. Malfi manages to write a story with breakneck speed while still creating robust characters that you live and die with along the way. The monsters here are a perfect blend of creepy, gory and malicious. This is a must read for any horror fans!
Overall - 3.5 starsStory - 4 starsNarration - 3 stars This novel was okay, but despite the fact that there are "things" in the snow, this was more of a thriller as opposed to a horror story. The narrator was ok, too, but his voice sounds like a news commentator, but once you get used to it it's not bad.
My favourite type of horror story is what I like to call "survival horror". That is, the type of tale where a group of characters become trapped somewhere and get picked off one by one by an initially unknown but powerful assailant. As their numbers dwindle, panic and desperation set in, the assailant (hopefully something monstrous or supernatural in nature) is revealed, and a battle to the bitter end takes place, with any survivors walking away changed for their experience. So, basically, I

Todd Curry wants nothing more than to spend Christmas with his son. But when a brutal snowstorm cancels his flight from Chicago to Des Moines, Todd and a few other stranded passengers decide to rent a Jeep and make the trip on their own. During the drive, they pick up a man wandering through the snow, who claims to be searching for his lost daughter. He is disoriented and his story seems peculiar. Strangest of all are the mysterious slashes cut into the back of the man’s coat, straight down to the flesh…When they arrive at the nearest town, it appears deserted. Windows dark, car abandoned, fired burning unattended. But Todd and the rest of the travelers soon learn the town is far from deserted, and that they are being watched…

I was introduced to the work of Author Ronald Malfi with his Floating Staircase, a novel of literary horror and familial entanglement, an excellent story. Snow is more straight horror, a novel which might edge on science fiction, but is primarily horror, and very horrifying indeed. The implacable nature and extent of the threat to our protagonists and to the townspeople of Woodson kept me awake, determined to finish the novel so I could actually sleep.
