John Lennon: The New York Years
"It was a form of heroism that led [Lennon] to live in New York as if he were an ordinary person - insisting on walking the streets, going to the movies, going to the park with his son, as if those freedoms were the right of anyone, even an ex-Beatle." -- Roger Ebert, in 1988
Bob Gruen's book is an outstanding collection of John Lennon photographs, focusing specifically on the years 1971 to 1980, when Lennon comfortably made the Big Apple his city of residence for the last years of his life. In very informative texts that accompany the photos, Gruen relates that he met Lennon and wife Yoko Ono soon after they moved to town, and he quickly became both their official photographer and a trusted friend, allowed access 'behind the scenes' and into their social circle.
If you are a Lennon admirer probably at least half of the photographs will look familiar, as Gruen was responsible for the memorable high-rise rooftop shot of a slouching Lennon attired in sunglasses and a sleeveless 'New York City' T-shirt in August 1974, as well as Lennon flashing a peace sign while standing tall in front of the Statue of Liberty one foggy morning just a few months later. However, the fun stuff can be found in the rarities or little-known photos. My favorite was a pic of Mick Jagger visiting John and Yoko in a recording studio (at 3 in the morning!) in 1972. The three sit together at a piano, laughing and smiling while singing and pounding out a tune. "They were having a great time" comments Gruen, and I think many a rock music listener would've loved to have been present, too.
Ehkä vähän itkettää, mutta upeita valokuvia kuitenkin (New York City -kuvat on ollu mun suosikkeja ihan aina).
Learned some new stuff about my favourite Beatle.

I love John Lennon, I love New York - what's not to love? It's a great high quality book, can usually get it pretty cheap as well
What a great book....such a beautiful tribute to the brilliant, peaceful, deep-thinker, John Lennon.
The photos are good, though mostly seen before. (At least others from the same sessions.) Gruen's commentary as a friend and neighbor is detailed and thoughtful, and really brings much more meaning to every shot.
"If I'd lived in Roman times, I'd have lived in Rome - where else? Today, America is the Roman Empire, and New York [City] is Rome itself." -- John Lennon, in 1972"It was a form of heroism that led [Lennon] to live in New York as if he were an ordinary person - insisting on walking the streets, going to the movies, going to the park with his son, as if those freedoms were the right of anyone, even an ex-Beatle." -- Roger Ebert, in 1988Bob Gruen's book is an outstanding collection of John Lennon
