There's only one interesting part, which Ariosto parodies in Canto V of the Orlando Furioso, so now I wanna revisit that. Otherwise skippable even for someone interested in this sort of thing. This book reminded me of when I was young and there was a period when I was very interested in King Arthur and his knights. I read a lot of stories about them, some modern and some old, and in the old stories all the knights were brave and all the ladies were beautiful, there were quests and challenges and everything was over the top. The good guys were very good and honorable, the bad guys were treacherous and repulsive, the challenges were impossible, everyone wore expensive and colorful

The first chapter about the knight who goes on a crusade and then becomes a hermit when he returns is something I've heard of before. It was something I read in a book on local history, bugging me because I'll have to try and track it down.

I'll admit it, I read about 2/3 of this, but never finished. I think I stopped when two fellows decided to fight with real swords but paper shields and without wearing real armor. I didn't want to see how much damage they would do to each other.

A very important book in the evolution of the novel. This was a major influence on Miguel de Cervantes and is even mentioned in "Don Quixote." The scene where they are burning Don Quixote's books, the priest saves this one from the fire and proclaims its greatness. If you can find a copy (mine is locked in a garage in Waukesha, but don't even think about it!) it is well worth the read.

Misogyny, racism and mindless violence coupled with extreme religious intolerance combine to deliver what should be a 15th century classic. Most enjoyable!

I read Tirant many years back, in Catalan. I think it was the 500 anniversary edition probably. If you're looking for something written in a simple and modern style, it is not. I haven't read any of the English adaptations so can't comment on their quality. The story has everything you would expect from cavalry novels, battles, adventures, politics, flirting, and yes, eroticism. Of course religion is also part of the book. Many of the battles would have to do with crusades, trying to recover
